Film posters. Film promotion and marketing. Hollywood. Cinema as business. DINCA does not report box office numbers nor marketing dollars, but DINCA does know how to Google search and Wikipedia. According to Wikipedia, “Marketing budgets [for Hollywood feature films] tend to equal anywhere between half or three times the production budget.” This general statement does not apply to all of the posters hereafter, but it does apply to the Gulliver’s Travels (2010), pictured above — one hell of a poster — recently, I saw a thick stack of these posters abandoned at the local movie theatre. Jack Black looks great on the print. This film surely will be a fun ride. Why? Beacause it’s “From the studio that brought you ‘Night at the Museum.’”

The film poster is a visual object that sells its event. Through its design, we discern what the film is about, the tone of the film, the technology, and so forth. Design is a crucial element in promoting the arts; however, print promotion is not always necessary underground.

Let us take a look at the good, the bad, and the absurd film posters of 2010.

House, Nobuhiko Obayashi, Japan 1977, 87 min, (Janus Films 2010 re-release poster)

Nibuhiko Obayashi’s House was originally released 1977 in Japan. It had a nice run, and then it hibernated for 30 years until Janus Films bought the distribution rights sometime around 2009. Janus had intentions on releasing House as part of their Eclipse line of dvds. Apparently, the Eclipse line was originally conceived as a sub-label for cults films. Janus distributed House, and Criterion Collection recently released House on dvd.

Nobuhiko Obayashi, Japan 1977, 87 min original poster art

Beautiful. The film poster for House was designed to promote the 2010 North American theatrical tour of the film. This poster was inspired by the original Japanese poster, pictured above.  The re-release poster is clean and bold with orange and black color; however, I admire the graphic and typographic clutter of the original ’77 poster and find it quite endearing.

Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives, Mexican Poster (click for more info via Mubi.com)

I do not know much about this film. Looking at the poster makes me want to see it as soon as possible. More info here via MUBI.com.

Sofia Coppola's Somewhere (2010)

Simple poster for an allegedly simple film. Typography looks nice, yellow type against the green foliage is inviting. The photograph covers ground, spanning from the pool, to the lounging couple, to the foliage, to the resort.

63rd 2010 Cannes Film Festival Poster 2010

This poster sparkles and streaks and represents all the glamour and glitz of that Cannes yacht party in all its fulsomeness. Juliette Binoche (Cache, 2005, The English Patient, 1996) poses with a magic paintbrush that streaks CGI gleam. The shadow on her face is odd.

2011 IFFR Poster (released in 2010)

Graphic design vanguard. Tasty. IFFR refresh of the tiger identity with paint (perhaps marker) XL hand-lettering.

Bold design in a two color print. Great use of red. Poster for the 2010 IFFR, released in 2009.

Cats and Dogs: Revenge of Kitty Galore

What kid would not want to see this 3D movie after sighting this. Great tagline, “Just Like Real Spies … Only Furrier,” and then we have the release date prefaced by “UNLEASHED IN 3D.” A cat, a dog and a tag-a-long pigeon fly over the city, jetpacked and goggled. The luster photoshop job on the animals recalls a few recent Adam Sandler movie posters, particularly Grown Ups (2010).

Grown Ups (2010)

Much like the Cats and Dogs poster, this poster Grown Ups implies that you are in for a fun ride. Hyper-realist photoshop job on this puppy. This poster hints that the apex of the movie is the great water-pater visit (?). I love riding the water slides. A fun ride.

Splice (2010)

This poster communicates f*ked up baby mutant in a gooey thriller.

And we finish appropriately with alternate poster for Gulliver’s Travels.

Jean-Luc typeface

Here is a great Christmas goody — the Jean-Luc typeface — a free download from Atelier Carvalho Bernau, an independent practice for graphic design, typography and typeface design, based in The Hague, The Netherlands. This font comes in multiple formats, including webfonts! Yes indeed, the .zip folder contains the font in the .otf, .svg, .eot, and .woff formats. So if you like getting sexy with your .css3 font embedding, you can use the Jean-Luc font on your next website. Better yet, use it in your own film titles in your next Jean-Luc rip-off or Breathless spoof. Be sure to read the .pdf license documentation in the .zip folder before doing any radical commercial/corporate work and branding, i.e., think twice if you’re planning on incorporating this font in your Pepsi re-branding strategy project.

We were always in love with the title sequence lettering to Godard’smovies Made in U.S.A. and2 ou 3 choses que je sais d’elle. So as an hommage toJean-Luc, to the Nouvelle Vague, to Seberg, Karina,Faithfull & Cie., we present you our Jean-Luc typeface, as a birthday gift for everyone. Voilà!

We didn’t find out who originally made the lettering for these two movies. Some speculate it could have been Godard himself – Godard’s interest in graphic design and typography is clear, with many of his other films employing such strong typography-only titles and intertitles. They are almost a self-sufficient entity, another character in the movie, another comment.

This style of lettering is so interesting to us because it is such a clear renunciation of the “pretty”, classical title screens that were common in that time’s more conservative films. It has a more vernacular and brutishly low-brow character; this lettering comes from the street. — Atelier Carvalho Bernau

This is a neat hand-drawn time-lapse animation from French graphic designer, Jean Jullien. He lives and works in London. “He comes from Nantes and did a graphic design degree in Quimper before coming to London. He graduated from Central Saint Martins in 2008 and from the Royal College of Art in 2010. He works closely with the musician Niwouinwouin. His practice ranges from Illustration to photography, video, costumes, installations, books, posters and clothing to create a coherent yet eclectic body of work.”

Anna Karina was a wife to master french new-wave director, Jean-luc Godard, and she is a lovely actress who starred in many of his films. She is a gem of the art-house cinema, a fashion icon, and even the super-models of today cite her as their inspiration. With Autumn here and Winter approaching, let us appreciate these summery photos.

Summer 2010 was great; Summer 2011 will be better yet.

“Evil People in Modernist Homes in Popular Films (Vol. 1) is a combination viewing list, star map, and catalogue, begat from a series of screenings held at the Yale School of Art during the Spring of 2010. The publication suggests the formation of a tentative filmic canon in which modernist homes are used by filmmakers as containers for immorality and vice. Essays by John Yoder and Joseph Rosa are paired with several illustrations as well as highlights from eight films that employ the trope, including The Damned Don’t Cry (1950), Diamonds are Forever (1971), Blade Runner (1982), Body Double (1984), Lethal Weapon 2 (1989), L.A. Confidential (1997), The Big Lebowski (1998), and Twilight (2008).”

I’m very pleased to have found a large-sized image of Harry Smith’s Tree of Life in the Four Worlds. Filmmaker and artist, Harry Smith, created this brilliant and unique interpretation of the Tree of Life in 1954 when he was employed at Inkweed Arts, a greeting card company owned by Lionel Ziprin. 500 copies were printed in the first edition. The Tree of Life was shown at the Whitney Museum exhibit “Beat Culture and the New America 1950-1965.” The 1997 edition is printed from the original collotype plates executed by Jordan Belson.

It has now been reprinted in a limited fine art edition of 500 on Arches Cover 7″x 28″, available for purchase.

Great films usually have great poster art, and Andrei Tarkovsky’s Solaris (1972) is no exception. Solaris is Tarkovsky’s filmic adaptation of Stanisław Lem’s 1961 story Solaris. Solaris is a fantastic science-fiction film, wherein Tarkovsky chases the metaphysical, dreams, alternate planes of existence, phantom entities, nodes of the past, present and future, and one’s longing for a wife whom is dead, but appears in present-time feverish visions. A large part of the film is falling in love with ghosts.

Solaris won the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes. During that time, Solaris was compared to Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odysessy; however, it’s known that Tarkovsky disliked 2001 and thought it was cold and sterile. According to Phillip Lopate in his essay “Solaris”, the media pushed a cold war sort of narrative during the time of its making: “The media played up the Cold War angle of the Soviet director’s determination to make an ‘anti-2001,’ and certainly Tarkovsky used more intensely individual characters and a more passionate human drama at the center than Kubrick.”

Steven Soderbergh remade Solaris with George Clooney in 2002.

It’s an undertaking to write about Andrei Tarkovsky’s films, Solaris speaks for itself, so, let’s reference the Criterion Collection’s synopsis:

Ground control has been receiving strange transmissions from the three remaining residents of the Solaris space station. When cosmonaut and psychologist Kris Kelvin is sent to investigate, he experiences the strange phenomena that afflict the Solaris crew, sending him on a voyage into the darkest recesses of his own consciousness. In Solaris, legendary Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky creates a brilliantly original science-fiction epic that challenges our preconceived notions of love, truth, and humanity itself.

Minimalist Monaco-Monospace is my first WordPress theme design for public release. It features minimalist and monospaced typography on a clean, typographic grid. Min. Mon-Mono is very similar to the layout of this blog: it features a sticky footer and two widgetized sidebars. The left is fixed (sticky) sidebar, and the right sidebar is normal and scrolls. This WordPress theme is 100% free for download. If you happen to download this, please send your feedback.

The design features the monaco font, one of my favs; however, only visitors on a macintosh computer will see monaco. Vistors using a PC will see the courier font.

This is the first release, therefore there may be some minor problemos. I’m 97% sure there are no problemos. If there are any problemos, please post here.

Regarding the digital turquoise gem (top of post), I’m designing a collection of bitmap gems; I am using this gem collection in a film I’m working on that is guided by my favorite William Blake poem. Stay tuned!

Reissue poster for Jean Luc Godard’s Pierrot Le Fou (1965)

We continue to plow our way through the best, and worst, film posters of the last 10 years. Today, on this good Tuesday, we’ll take a close look at 10 more great works.

The above poster is a lovely re-release of Jean-Lu Godard’s 1965 road film Pierrot Le Fou.

David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive (2001)

People have mixed feelings on this film — even Lynch fans — personally, this film is in my top five of the last 10 years. I feel many misread this film; this first act of the film is kitsch; I think this works well; most interpret it as plain cheese. It’s quite apparent this poster is guilty of a shoddy photoshop job. The placement of beauty, embodied by Naomi Watts and Laura Harring, captures the essence of the film, particularly its woozy tone and the action of the sleuthing by the two ladies. The importance of a Hollywood setting is represented and the bold type works well.

Don’t get me started on the lesbian scene. Haha!

Amir Bar-Lev’s My Kid Could Paint That (2007)

A delightful little documentary; an open-ended film that leaves the viewer responsible for a conclusion. The tag-line of the film (top and bottom of the title) sums up the film’s argument and the film investigates quite objectively. A small child who stands in front of her Jackson Pollack-esque painting stirs interest. Did she paint it, or was it the work of her father … that is the question.

Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette, (2006)

Not a huge fan of this film, but the pink is a great representation of the Sofia Coppola’s candy-colored palette, and the punky-pink type epitomizes the soundtrack. Of course Kirsten Dunst beautifies.

What the hell? A film about a man pushing a cart? Don’t be fooled: This is a great film.

Ron Mann’s Know Your Mushrooms (2008)

I don’t know what to say about this poster other than I love this dude’s glasses and his wicked pippy-tails.

Stanley Kubrick’s Eye Wide Shut (1999)

Gus Van Sant’s Elephant (2003)

This artwork is iconic, it really stands out, and I think the middle-placement of the small still works really well.

Frederico Fellini’s Amarcord (1973)

Beautiful artwork by San Francisco-based painter Caitlin Kuhwald. Amarcord limited edition art prints are available for purchase via the Criterion Collection store.

The 2010 International Film Festival Rotterdam will be held January 27 – Febuary 7. The entire film schedule has yet to be released, but the Rotterdam Festival continues to leak selections, stating “The complete line up of approximately fifteen films in VPRO Tiger Awards Competition will be announced by January 7, 2010.” The poster art has been released and it’s lovely. Dutch design reigns supreme.

Some expect 2010 short film selections will be announced around Jan. 7th as well.
