Nicolas Sassoon

December 11th to December 18th, 2010

Nicolas Sassoon is an exciting artist to follow, whose work translates the ineffable by means of the animated .gif, the computer drawing, and animation. Hot Springs, Sassoon’s exhibit at 304 Days, Vancouver, Canada, “exhibits an installation of sculpture, print and animation. His practice examines the relations between architecture, landscape, and the origins of computer technology.

Nicolas Sassoon received his MFA from EESI. Nicolas lives and works in Vancouver and Biarritz, France.”

304 Days
436 Columbia Street
Vancouver

304days.com

Gallery Hours: Friday & Saturday // 12pm to 5pm // and by appointment

Sassoon takes the animated .gif to a new level, usually working with the XL-sized canvas. The Hot Springs .gif below is embedded at its original size, therefore it overlaps this blog’s main column. Well worth the overlap. Please take the time to visit Sassoon’s website — click hier — and enjoy the complexity of the Sassoon animated .gif.

October 22 – October 30, 2010

319 Scholes presents
DUMP.FM IRL

319 Scholes St.
Brooklyn, NY

dump.fm is an image-based chat room for real-time communication. Founded in November 2009 by Ryder Ripps in collaboration with Scott Ostler (of MIT Exhibit) and Tim Baker (of Delicious), dump.fm serves as a platform for artists who use its technology to foster community and creativity. IRL brings together dump.fm users from all over the world (many of whom will be meeting “In Real Life” for the first time) to offer an alternative to the traditional 1:1 experience by translating the liveness of dump.fm into a visual confectionery through collaborative participation in the physical realm. Look for caves animated by psychedelic GIFs, web-based performances with interactive webcams, architectural renderings of virtual property, and audio-visual recompositions that return images to the social networks and digital systems from which they emerge.

RED GREEN BLUE Marion Cotillard bit-gif-map portrait series animated

marion-cotillard-sexy-bitmap-blue

I was having fun on the computer late last night, and I don’t remember how or why, but I found myself making this at 4:00am. It was a great procrastination tool for a new 3-channel video installation collaboration. Regardless, I probably should have been sleeping, but my mother says I have been a night owl since I was born. Working with the dark is something I do best. Silly stuff for sharing.

I suggest arbitrarily emailing these to your friends just to say hello and good day. You can one-click email this by navigating to the bottom of this post and clicking the “Share/Save” button –> email. They’re digital postcards, if the internet died, these things are useless, but let’s not speculate.

Note: click the images to enlarge and you will see the bitty texture.

Artist Interview: DINCA asks Rafaël Rozendaal One Question

21 April, 2010 by

Rafaël Rozendaal is a Netherlands-based artist who creates exceptional work; his art arouses that of computer art, cyberspace, and other forms that defy classification. His art is verily digital: Rozendaal also has created a number of concept-computer art websites. Part of Rozendaal’s work is computer-generated animations, and his animations are way good, and he has made many. I currently am running one of Rafaël’s screensavers — you should too — check them out here. Also of note, Rozendaal is currently selling signed prints of his “Dollar Poster” painting. Also of note: Rozendaal, inside of his mouth on the inner lip, has a tattoo that reads “internet.” He loves the internet (don’t we all?).

One of those websites is Rozendaal’s One Question Interview, a blog where Rozendaal interviews great artists, artists of all mediums, asking them just one question.

dinca.org decided to turn the table on Rafaël — do the olde tyme switcheroo — asking Rafaël just one question.

Delaware Design Portfolio

Cloudy (2006)

Founded by Masato Samata in 1993, Delaware is Japan-based design/art collective that creates technicolored and pixelated images (among many other things). Previously, Dinca posted unmarked animated gifs — Delaware designed those .gifs as well. Below are nine more designs by Delaware … a candy colored portfolio and a throwback to the bitmap images of the ’90s. Cloudy (pictured above) reminds me of the tiny-size chiclets.
