I am in a room with a dog who is barking, talking to him, as people talk to dogs– just as a kind of self-soothing jabber. But as I am “conversing” with the dog, he begins to bark in a strange way. His bark sounds like the word “talk”. He keeps barking it and it gets clearer until I am convinced he is saying he can talk.
I say to him “You can talk? Are you trying to tell me you can talk?” At that moment, he turns into a fat guy, who sits on the couch. His voice belies his slovenly appearance: it is sensitive and thoughtful. He tells me:
“You have no idea how painful it is to be trapped inside that animal, unable to express myself.”
